The time I accosted that woman from Baroness von Sketch Show on the street
and all the things I ~*should*~ be doing this holiday season
Good morning starshine,
This December is shaping up to be a month of ‘should’s. Back in October, I was optimistic to the point of buying tickets to fly to Prince George for Christmas, but it is now abundantly clear that there will be no snowy hot tub sessions, snowmobiling, playing make believe with my niece, or meeting my nephew this year. We’ll save it for when it’s safer.
Instead, I’ll be focusing on all the things I should be doing. Like, I definitely should:
stay at home in Toronto for Christmas
seriously, stay home and write
go for a run at some point, I guess
finish drywalling the office
put a door on the office for the hopeful ‘one day’ when it might get to be a guest room
maybe stretch?
finish my work year strong so January isn’t the worst
I’m aiming for a 90% should-to-did conversion rate. What are you doing for the holidays?
The best thing I heard/watched this week
I’m reading
What’s happening in Punjab right now, and why many Canadians are joining in protest. What’s the deal with QAnon and it’s thousands of followers in Canada. This flash fiction about babies and moths. Updates from the trial of Toronto incel Alek Minassian, the man who killed 10 people, injured 16 others, and would do it again to improve his kill count.
The (incidentally Canadian) good stuff
I live a stone’s throw from the Baroness von Sketch Show writers’ room, and you betcha that I accosted Meredith MacNeill (the one in pink) when she had the misfortune to leave the office as I was walking home from work. We shook then held each other’s hands for longer than I’m sure she was comfortable with, and I thought about lying when she asked if I had work and begging to be an assistant in their writers’ room. I was rambling, sweating profusely, and ultimately shout-invited her to my book club (what is wrong with me?) as she got into her Uber as quickly as she could, then walked home as naturally as possible (which obviously meant strutting like I was suffering from a yeast infection) and phoned anyone I thought would know the show, and somehow, no one did??
If you’ve somehow managed to not see anything from Baroness von Sketch Show over the last few years, just wow. It’s magnificent. There’s so much to catch up on, but here are three of my favourite of their sketches.
The one where the coworker discovers RuPaul’s Drag Race:
The truth about how dry shampoo is the only thing holding me together anymore:
And the one about brooding over men on the moors:
I don’t know what they’re doing after this season ends, but it will be amazing and I will watch it. In the meantime. you can watch snippets or full seasons on YouTube, CBC Gem, and Netflix (in many countries!)
Until next time, have a great weekend. If you have a friend who you think might not hate this, why not forward it to them?
